X launches Stories, delivering news summarized by Grok AI

Saturday - May 4 - 2024

X, formerly Twitter, is now using Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok to power a feature that summarizes the personalized trending stories in the app’s Explore section.

According to an announcement and screenshots posted by the X Engineering team on Friday, X’s Premium subscribers will be able to read a summary of posts on X associated with each trending story featured on the For You tab in Explore.

Apple CEO Tim Cook didn’t give much away about the company’s AI plans on Thursday’s Q2 earnings call with investors, but he did confirm a few tidbits about how the tech giant plans to move forward with artificial intelligence.

Notably, his comments suggested that despite spending more than $100 billion on R&D over the last five years, Apple isn’t planning to spin up too many new data centers to run or train AI models. Instead, when it comes to AI, it will continue to pursue a “hybrid” approach, as it does with other cloud services, the company told investors.

X, formerly Twitter, now leverages Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok to summarize personalized trending stories in its Explore section.

X Premium subscribers can access summaries of posts associated with each trending story on the For You tab in Explore.

The For You page presents popular news and stories within your network, streamlining your platform catch-up. Each story now features a Grok-powered summary offering an overview.

Despite Grok's occasional errors, the service is aimed at enriching user experience. Previously, Twitter provided trend annotations inconsistently, lacking Grok’s real-time insights.

Access to Grok is a premium feature, enticing users with its unique data access. Elon Musk plans to further integrate AI-powered news on X.

Grok's summaries are conversation-centric, potentially overlooking actual news content.

This trend of AI news summaries raises concerns for traditional news outlets, with some seeking partnerships to maintain relevance.

Grok’s Stories are available to Premium X subscribers, starting at $8 per month.

Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the company's AI strategy during Thursday's Q2 earnings call.

Despite hefty R&D spending, Apple won't heavily invest in new data centers for AI. Instead, it will adopt a hybrid approach.

Cook emphasized AI's role across Apple's product range, beyond just the iPhone, highlighting its integration in MacBook Air and Apple Watch features.

He hinted at upcoming AI developments but suggested no major announcements before WWDC in June.

A correction clarified earlier misinterpretations about AI news, affirming expectations for AI-related announcements closer to WWDC.

Cloud infrastructure growth rebounded strongly in the last quarter, reaching $76 billion, a 21% increase from Q1 2023.

Generative AI and data demands are major drivers, with Microsoft, Google, and Amazon benefiting from AI-related business.

AI's advancement enhances cloud providers' value, spurring demand for computational power.

Startups heavily rely on cloud platforms, expecting increased investment in AI-optimized infrastructure.

Financially, Amazon's cloud revenue hit $25 billion, Azure achieved a $76 billion run rate with 25% market share, and Google saw a 28% YoY increase.

Despite not matching pre-2022 growth rates, the cloud market is expected to double in size over the next four years, propelled by AI-driven demand for data management.

Y Combinator's founder-matching tool has quietly become a powerful resource, facilitating connections among startup founders.

Recent graduate Hona exemplifies its success, founded by Danielle Yoesep and Adam Steinle, who met in middle school and reconnected later.

Seeking an AI specialist co-founder, they utilized the platform and found Shuying Zhang, a former Google engineer.

Their journey, akin to "Tinder for co-founders," led to Hona's inception. Despite initial rejection from YC, their perseverance paid off.

They garnered investor interest, conducted trials at prestigious institutions, and secured funding.

With a focus on customizable AI for medical records, Hona navigates a competitive field with confidence.

Zhang encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to embrace the journey, emphasizing the importance of compatibility and collaboration.
