Monday - May 6 - 2024

Wayve, a U.K.-born startup developing a self-learning rather than rule-based system for autonomous driving, has closed $1.05 billion in Series C funding led by SoftBank Group.

This is the U.K.’s largest AI fundraise ever and sits among the top 20 AI fundraises globally to date.

It seems we’re all in agreement: Kendrick Lamar defeated Drake in one of the most engrossing rap battles of the decade.

To add insult to injury, Drake also threw himself into legal hot water when he deepfaked the late rapper Tupac.

Wayve, a U.K.-based startup, has garnered $1.05 billion in Series C funding, led by SoftBank Group, marking the U.K.'s largest AI fundraiser to date and ranking it among the top 20 globally.

The round also saw contributions from Nvidia and Microsoft, with plans to expand globally and develop products for both assisted and fully automated driving.

Founded in Cambridge in 2017, Wayve's unique self-learning system, contrary to rule-based approaches, is now training on delivery vehicles for companies like Ocado.

With a focus on developing 'Embodied AI' for various automotive and robotics applications, Wayve aims to pioneer advancements in autonomous driving technology.

Kendrick Lamar triumphed over Drake in a highly watched rap battle, marking a significant moment in their longstanding rivalry.

The conflict reignited when J. Cole termed them and himself the "Big Three" of rap, leading Lamar to respond with a verse sharply criticizing both Cole and Drake.

This set off a digital-era rap battle featuring numerous artists and online campaigns.

A major talking point emerged when Drake used AI-generated vocals of Tupac without permission, sparking debates about AI's role in music.

The battle showcased the speed of modern diss tracks with Lamar responding in minutes, highlighting the influence of the internet on music feuds.

Drake's approach appeared influenced by real-time social media interactions, contrasting Lamar's targeted lyrical attacks.

The feud also reflected broader concerns about AI in music, including issues of consent and authenticity.

MIT President Sally Kornbluth and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the evolution of AI and its implications for society at an event on MIT's campus.

They explored the progress and ethical challenges of AI, noting the strides in aligning AI systems with human values despite societal disagreements over their application.

Altman highlighted the transformative potential of AI in scientific discovery and economic growth, while acknowledging its impact on job displacement.

He emphasized the need for continuous improvement in AI technology to address privacy and energy consumption issues.

Both speakers urged a forward-thinking approach, with Altman encouraging students to embrace problem-solving and optimism in shaping a better future.

The White House has introduced new regulations targeting manufacturers of synthetic DNA to prevent potential misuse, including the creation of pathogens.

These measures stem from a presidential executive order aimed at enhancing AI safety and security in biotechnology.

The regulations require DNA manufacturers to screen for dangerous sequences and verify customer legitimacy, though currently, they only apply to federally funded entities.

Despite existing voluntary guidelines and industry consortium efforts, inconsistency remains.

The move underscores growing concerns over the ease and affordability of DNA synthesis, which has enabled significant advances but also raises the potential for misuse.

Industry leaders welcome the regulation, advocating for responsible and ethical use of DNA technology.
