U.K. agency releases tools to test AI model safety
Sunday - May 12 - 2024
The U.K. Safety Institute, the U.K.’s recently established AI safety body, has released a toolset designed to “strengthen AI safety” by making it easier for industry, research organizations and academia to develop AI evaluations.
Called Inspect, the toolset — which is available under an open source license, specifically an MIT License — aims to assess certain capabilities of AI models, including models’ core knowledge and ability to reason, and generate a score based on the results.
In the third episode of “Creative Dialogues,” an interview series produced by the filmmaking division of generative AI startup Runway, multimedia artist Claire Hentschker expresses a fear that AI will commoditize the artistic process to the point where art homogenizes, regressing to a sort of derivative sameness.

The U.K. Safety Institute has launched Inspect, a toolset to enhance AI safety, under an open source MIT License.
It evaluates AI models on core knowledge and reasoning capabilities, generating a score.
Inspect is the first state-backed AI safety platform for broad use. It includes datasets, solvers, and scorers to carry out and assess tests, and can integrate third-party Python packages.
This release follows a U.S.-U.K. partnership to advance AI model testing, which includes U.S. plans for its own AI safety institute.
In the third episode of "Creative Dialogues" by Runway's filmmaking division, artist Claire Hentschker voiced concerns about AI commoditizing art into uniformity.
At Runway's second annual AI Film Festival, AI's influence on filmmaking was evident but varied.
Despite AI elements like synthetic voice-overs and AI-generated backdrops, the human touch—seen in films like “Where Do Grandmas Go When They Get Lost?”—proved pivotal.
The festival highlighted the mixed effectiveness of AI in filmmaking, with the Grand Prix winner “Get Me Out” emphasizing human contributions over AI-generated graphics.
OpenAI, with Microsoft's backing, is poised to launch its AI-driven search tool, potentially challenging Google's dominance.
Scheduled for release just before Google’s I/O conference, this move signals a major shift in the search engine landscape.
Google has integrated AI into its services, but OpenAI's new product, an expansion of ChatGPT, will allow web-based searches with cited responses.
This could redefine internet search with AI-driven, interactive experiences, intensifying competition with other search entities like Perplexity, which recently partnered with SoundHound to enhance voice-assisted searches.
Joel Lewenstein of Anthropic used the company's Claude chatbot to solve a problem with his home's irrigation system, demonstrating the practical use of AI in everyday tasks.
The chatbot, which supports image analysis, helped him understand the system's knobs.
This feature is part of Anthropic's broader AI capabilities, introduced to users via an iOS app.
Lewenstein advises engaging with Claude conversationally, using images to initiate queries, and being specific with prompts.
He suggests using Claude for analyzing documents and stresses interactive dialogue for better outcomes, illustrating the evolving use of AI in enhancing user experiences.
