It’s Time to Believe the AI Hype
Wednesday - May 21 - 2024
Tech pundits are fond of using the term “inflection points” to describe those rare moments when new technology wipes the board clean, opening up new threats and opportunities.
But one might argue that in the past few years what used to be called out as an inflection point might now just be called “Monday.”
In July last year, OpenAI announced the formation of a new research team that would prepare for the advent of supersmart artificial intelligence capable of outwitting and overpowering its creators.
Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s chief scientist and one of the company’s cofounders, was named as the colead of this new team. OpenAI said the team would receive 20 percent of its computing power.

Summary:
Tech pundits often declare "inflection points" when new technology reshapes the landscape, presenting both threats and opportunities.
This week, OpenAI countered rumors by launching GPT-4o, a free, multimodal model that interacts naturally in text, speech, and vision.
Meanwhile, Google's I/O conference introduced Gemini Pro and Project Astra, another advanced AI chatbot.
Despite the shock of ChatGPT's initial impact, some argue this rapid progress is just an illusion, with skeptics suggesting AI's transformative effects are overstated.
Yet, the ongoing innovations suggest AI's potential remains vast, promising a future where daily interactions with AI could become as commonplace as using a smartphone.
Last July, OpenAI formed a research team to tackle superintelligent AI risks, led by cofounder Ilya Sutskever.
However, OpenAI has since disbanded this "superalignment team" amid high-profile departures, including Sutskever and co-lead Jan Leike.
This dissolution follows a governance crisis and internal disagreements over priorities and resources.
Despite these challenges, research on AI risks continues under new leadership.
OpenAI's recent advancements, like the multimodal AI model GPT-4o, prompt ongoing ethical debates about AI's impact on privacy and society.
Consumer interest in AI technology is surging, as evidenced by OpenAI’s recent launch of GPT-4o.
Despite being free online, GPT-4o’s mobile availability is behind a $19.99 monthly subscription, leading to OpenAI's largest mobile revenue spike yet.
The model, handling text, speech, and video with real-time and emotive capabilities, has pushed users to upgrade.
From May 13-17, the ChatGPT mobile app generated $4.2 million, driven mainly by U.S. users, marking a significant consumer shift towards premium AI experiences on mobile platforms.
When Jeffrey Wang of Exa Labs posted on X about buying office nap pods, he didn’t expect his post to go viral with demand for over 100 units.
While many supported the idea of office napping, others raised concerns about sharing bedsheets in the workplace.
Amidst jokes and admiration for the nap pods, some questioned the expectation of employees sleeping at work, suggesting it indicates intense hustle culture.
Wang defends this, emphasizing that sleep boosts productivity and is vital in a startup environment where commitment is crucial.
