Good evening. “OpenAI” We’re teaching AI to understand and simulate the physical world in motion, with the goal of training models that help people solve problems that require real-world interaction.

Introducing Sora, our text-to-video model. Sora can generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality and adherence to the user’s prompt.

The maker of ChatGPT is now diving into AI-generated video.

Meet Sora—OpenAI's new text-to-video generator.
The tool, which the San Francisco company unveiled Thursday, uses generative artificial intelligence to instantly create short videos based on written commands.

Sora isn't the first to demonstrate this kind of technology.
But industry analysts point to the high quality of the tool's videos displayed so far, and note that its introduction marks a significant leap for both OpenAI and the future of text-to-video generation overall.

Still, as with all things in the rapidly-growing AI space today, such technology also raises fears about potential ethical and societal implications. Here's what you need to know.

OpenAI has unveiled a new tool to make ultra-realistic artificial intelligence-generated videos from text inputs, sparking concerns about such AI systems being misused to manipulate voters ahead of elections.

The AI tool, named Sora, can be used to create videos of up to 60 seconds with “highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions,” the ChatGPT company said in a blog post on Thursday.

OpenAI shared multiple sample videos that were made using the AI tool, which looked surreal.

One example video shows two people, seemingly a couple, walking through a snowy Tokyo street with their backs to the “camera” walking.

The very lifelike video was generated by the AI tool from a detailed text prompt: “Beautiful, snowy Tokyo city is bustling. The camera moves through the bustling city street, following several people enjoying the beautiful snowy weather and shopping at nearby stalls.

Gorgeous sakura petals are flying through the wind along with snowflakes.”

Another video made using the tool and shared by OpenAI chief Sam Altman shows ultrarealistic wooly mammoths treading through a snowy landscape with snowcapped mountains at a distance.

Modern artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, is capable of mimicking human behaviors, but the former has more positive outcomes such as cooperation, altruism, trust and reciprocity.

In a new University of Michigan study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers used "behavioral" Turing tests—which test a machine's ability to exhibit human-like responses and intelligence—to evaluate the personality and behavior of a series of AI chatbots.

The tests involved ChatGPT answering psychological survey questions and playing interactive games. The researchers compared ChatGPT's choices to those of 108,000 people from more than 50 countries.

Study lead author Qiaozhu Mei, professor at U-M's School of Information and College of Engineering, said AI's behavior—since it exhibited more cooperation and altruism—may be well suited for roles necessitating negotiation, dispute resolution, customer service and caregiving.

This week’s episode is a conversation with Demis Hassabis, the head of Google’s artificial intelligence division. We talk about Google’s latest A.I. models, Gemini and Gemma; the existential risks of artificial intelligence; his timelines for artificial general intelligence; and what he thinks the world will look like post-A.G.I.

This interview was recorded on Wednesday. Since then, Google has temporarily suspended Gemini’s ability to generate images of humans, following criticism of images the chatbot generated of people of color in Nazi-era uniforms.

Scientists have used artificial intelligence to overcome a huge challenge for producing near-limitless clean energy with nuclear fusion.

A team from Princeton University in the US figured out a way to use an AI model to predict and prevent instabilities with plasma during fusion reactions.

Nuclear fusion has been hailed as the “holy grail” of clean energy for its potential to produce vast amounts of energy without requiring any fossil fuels or leaving behind any hazardous waste.

The process mimics the same natural reactions that occur within the Sun, however harnessing nuclear fusion energy has proved immensely difficult.

In 2022, a team from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved the first ever net energy gain with nuclear fusion, meaning they were able to produce more energy than was input for the reaction.

It was only a small amount – roughly enough to boil a kettle – but it represented a major milestone towards achieving it at scale.

When a human-AI conversation involves many rounds of continuous dialogue, the powerful large language machine-learning models that drive chatbots like ChatGPT sometimes start to collapse, causing the bots’ performance to rapidly deteriorate.
