With OpenAI’s Release of GPT-4o, Is ChatGPT Plus Still Worth It?
Wednesday - May 15 - 2024
BARRET ZOPH, A research lead at OpenAI, was recently demonstrating the new GPT-4o model and its ability to detect human emotions though a smartphone camera when ChatGPT misidentified his face as a wooden table.
After a quick laugh, Zoph assured GPT-4o that he’s not a table and asked the AI tool to take a fresh look at the app’s live video rather than a photo he shared earlier. “Ah, that makes more sense,” said ChatGPT’s AI voice, before describing his facial expression and potential emotions.
Bumble founder and executive chair Whitney Wolfe Herd raised eyebrows this week with her comments about how AI might change the dating experience.
During an onstage interview, Bloomberg’s Emily Chang brought up bots posing as real people, or real people falling in love with bots, as examples of how AI might make online dating worse.

BARRET ZOPH, a research lead at OpenAI, demonstrated the new GPT-4o model's ability to detect emotions through a smartphone camera when ChatGPT misidentified his face as a wooden table.
Zoph laughed and assured GPT-4o he’s not a table, then asked the AI to check the live video instead of a photo.
“Ah, that makes more sense,” said ChatGPT’s AI voice.
OpenAI launched the GPT-4o model, which processes text, audio, and images, for free.
This model includes features previously only for paid users, like memory and web browsing.
Free users are rate-limited but can use the GPT Store, web-browsing tool, memory features, and upload photos and files for analysis.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers get more prompts and access to new features.
They can send GPT-4o five times as many prompts and use the impressive voice mode arriving soon.
Plus, the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac is available first to subscribers, with a wider rollout expected later.
If you’re fine with waiting for new features, you don’t need a subscription. However, if you want extensive use and access to the latest tools, the $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus subscription is worth it.
Go on, let bots date other bots
Summary:
Bumble founder and executive chair Whitney Wolfe Herd sparked discussion this week with her comments on how AI might change dating.
During an interview, Bloomberg’s Emily Chang mentioned AI bots posing as people or people falling in love with bots, suggesting AI might worsen online dating.
Herd countered, saying Bumble aims to use AI to create healthier and more equitable relationships.
Herd envisioned a "dating concierge" AI that could help users with dating tips and even find matches by going on dates with other AI concierges.
If the bots had a good date, their human counterparts would be matched.
The audience reacted with laughter, but Herd remained serious, suggesting the AI could scan potential matches and recommend a few top choices.
Herd’s remarks, covered by NBC News, drew comparisons to a “Black Mirror” episode, “Hang the DJ,” where characters in a simulation test their romantic compatibility.
In the episode, the simulations endure repetitive, meaningless relationships, only to discover their lives are a lie.
While the "Black Mirror" episode ends on a positive note, the critique highlights the dystopian nature of living in a digital simulation.
Herd's idea of bots dating other bots may seem humorous, but it also raises questions about the future of AI in our personal lives.
If bots were fully-fledged digital replicas capturing human complexity, the concept might work. However, if they're just basic chatbots, the dating experience would likely fall short.
Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, announced a long-term partnership with Google Cloud to develop and deliver cloud and generative AI products to Indian businesses.
This collaboration targets Airtel's extensive customer base, which includes 2,000 large enterprises and a million emerging businesses, aiming to offer AI solutions like generative AI trained on Airtel's vast data sets.
The partnership will provide businesses with products such as geospatial analytics, location intelligence, predictive capabilities, market assessment, site selection, risk management, and asset tracking.
Additionally, voice analytics for conversational applications across multiple languages and marketing technology to forecast consumer behavior and streamline content creation will be offered.
Airtel has set up a managed service center in Pune with over 300 experts for support.
Tech giants Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are increasingly targeting the telecommunications industry to leverage the vast data generated by billions of customers worldwide.
These firms have signed deals with telecom operators globally, including in the U.S. and UK, and are pushing their generative AI offerings to businesses.
Google, already an investor in Airtel with a $1 billion commitment in 2022, also backs Jio Platforms, which partners with Microsoft to sell Office 365 and Azure in India.
The financial terms of the Google-Airtel deal were not disclosed. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian called the partnership a "significant milestone" in accelerating cloud and AI adoption in India.
To spotlight AI-focused women academics and contributors, TechCrunch has been publishing a series of interviews highlighting remarkable women in AI.
These profiles aim to bring attention to key work that often goes unrecognized.
Dar’shun Kendrick, a Georgia House Representative elected at 27, has a notable career in policy, equity, and technology.
She serves on the AI subcommittee and founded the Georgia House’s first Technology, Innovation & Entrepreneurship caucus.
Kendrick, an alumna of Oglethorpe University and the University of Georgia School of Law, opened a law and investment advisory firm to support women and Black founders.
Kendrick's AI involvement stems from her work as a securities attorney.
She finds AI fascinating for its potential to simplify life while ensuring it doesn’t disrupt democracy.
Her AI subcommittee recently passed legislation addressing election "deepfakes," marking Georgia's proactive stance on AI regulation.
In the male-dominated tech industry, Kendrick's strategy is to show up, know her stuff, and provide value.
She advises women entering AI to produce, show up, and continuously learn.
She believes women can envision AI products that simplify lives, even if they don’t build them themselves.
Pressing AI issues include fraud, privacy, and slow adaptation by small businesses.
Responsible AI development requires a written ethics framework focusing on privacy, data security, anti-fraud measures, and reassessment of discriminatory issues.
Investors should push for responsible AI through ethics plans and ESG accountability. Balancing innovation with rights is crucial for advancing AI responsibly.

The power of App Inventor: Democratizing possibilities for mobile applications
In June 2007, Apple unveiled the first iPhone with a walled garden approach for its App Store, restricting unvetted apps.
This limited educators' ability to teach mobile software development.
MIT professor Hal Abelson, on sabbatical at Google, saw the need for an open-source alternative, leading to the creation of Android and subsequently App Inventor.
French art group uses brainwaves and AI to recreate landscapes
The vibrant image of a dark hill and lava flow is remarkable, not just for its beauty, but for its high-tech AI origins.
Created by the French art collective Obvious, the image was generated from the brainwaves of one member, Pierre Fautrel, who focused intently on a volcano while undergoing an MRI scan at the Brain Institute of the Pitie Salpetriere hospital in Paris.
Met Gala AI-Generated Images of Katy Perry, Rihanna Deceive Fans
