OpenAI inks deal to train AI on Reddit data

Friday - May 17 - 2024

OpenAI has reached a deal with Reddit to use the social news site’s data for training AI models.

In a blog post on OpenAI’s press relations site, the company said that the Reddit partnership will provide it access to “real-time, structured and unique content” — e.g. posts and replies — from Reddit, allowing its tools and models to “better understand and showcase” that content.

Autonomous, AI-based players are coming to a gaming experience near you, and a new startup, Altera, is joining the fray to build this new guard of AI agents.

The company announced Wednesday that it raised $9 million in an oversubscribed seed round, co-led by First Spark Ventures (Eric Schmidt’s deep-tech fund) and Patron (the seed-stage fund co-founded by Riot Games alums).

OpenAI has partnered with Reddit to use its data for training AI models. This deal enables OpenAI to access Reddit's unique content, including posts and replies, to enhance its conversational AI, ChatGPT.

OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner and explore new AI features for Reddit users and moderators.

Despite OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's significant stake in Reddit, the partnership was led by COO Brad Lightcap and approved by an independent board.

Reddit, now a public company, continues to expand its data licensing to boost revenue, evidenced by a significant year-over-year increase in non-ad revenue.

X, formerly known as Twitter, is enhancing its Communities feature to foster networking around specific topics.

The update includes better discovery tools, recommendations, and sorting options aimed at increasing user engagement.

This revamp is part of a broader strategy to make X more valuable by generating richer data, potentially rivaling platforms like Reddit.

X's integration with Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, and its Grok chatbot, which accesses real-time X data, highlights its commitment to leveraging Communities to boost both user interaction and data utility.

GrubMarket, which links food suppliers with customers through its software, recently acquired the AI-driven SaaS platform Butter to digitalize the manual food distribution process.

This move aims to make supply chains more efficient, particularly for small restaurants and groceries.

California-based GrubMarket, which has purchased over 100 companies, plans to integrate Butter's technology with its services.

Butter, valued at $39 million in 2022, was founded during the pandemic to help food wholesalers manage inventory and customer relationships digitally.

GrubMarket's CEO Mike Xu states the company remains profitable, with a revenue run rate aiming to surpass $2 billion in 2024.

Ampere and Qualcomm, both known for their Arm-based data center chips, have teamed up to create an AI-focused server.

This server combines Ampere's CPUs with Qualcomm's Cloud AI 100 Ultra AI inferencing chips, targeting AI model inference rather than training.

Ampere, traditionally focused on efficient server chips, collaborates with Qualcomm to handle larger AI models and enhance performance.

This partnership, including integration assistance from SuperMicro, aims to offer scalable and efficient AI solutions across various market segments.

Additionally, Ampere's upcoming 256-core AmpereOne chip, built on a 3nm process, promises improved performance with optimized power consumption for data centers.

This new chip also features 12-channel DDR5 RAM to better meet data center memory needs.

Google’s AI Overviews Are Here, Whether You Want Them or Not

Google's AI Overviews in Search, announced at their I/O conference, now feature prominently in U.S. search results, offering AI-generated summaries for complex queries.

These Overviews appear at the top of search pages, replacing traditional web links and cannot be disabled, although users can opt for a web-only view post-query.
