Musk ends OpenAI lawsuit while slamming Apple’s ChatGPT plans

Thursday - June 13 - 2024

Elon Musk has dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI, the company he co-founded in 2015.

Court filings from the Superior Court of California reveal that Musk called off the legal action on June 11th, just before an informal conference was scheduled to discuss the discovery process.

Musk had sued OpenAI in March 2024, alleging breach of contracts, unfair business practices, and fiduciary duty failures.

He claimed his contributions were made based on promises that the assets were dedicated to building AI for public benefit, prioritizing safety.

Musk’s filings provided no explanation for abandoning the lawsuit. OpenAI had called Musk’s claims “incoherent,” noting the lack of a contract made his breach claims difficult to prove.

The withdrawal comes as Musk opposes Apple’s plans to integrate ChatGPT into its operating systems, threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies.

Musk criticized Apple’s data security, despite assurances from Apple and OpenAI.

Since the lawsuit, Musk has created his own AI company, xAI, securing over $6 billion in funding to advance the Grok chatbot on his social network, X.

His actions suggest a shift in focus towards his own AI endeavors while continuing to criticize OpenAI on social media.

Most coverage of humanoid robotics focuses on hardware design. Given the frequent mention of “general purpose humanoids,” more attention should be paid to the concept.

After decades of single-purpose systems, the leap to generalized systems will be significant. We're not there yet.

A key topic is creating robotic intelligence that leverages bipedal design.

Recent MIT research highlights how generative AI might impact this.

Training remains a major challenge, with promising methods like reinforcement and imitation learning.

Future solutions will likely combine these methods with generative AI.

MIT suggests using policy composition (PoCo) to collate information from small, task-specific datasets.

This method enables robots to perform tasks like pounding nails and flipping spatulas.

Diffusion models, when incorporated, improved task performance by 20%, allowing robots to execute complex tasks and adapt to new ones.

Lead author Lirui Wang notes, “We can combine policies for the best of both worlds.

Real-world data policies offer dexterity, while simulation-trained policies offer generalization.

The goal is to create systems that allow robots to swap tools for different tasks, moving the industry closer to general-purpose systems.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo developed a "musculoskeletal humanoid" named Musashi, capable of driving a small electric car.

Equipped with cameras as eyes, mechanical hands, and anti-slip feet, Musashi can see the road, operate controls, and press pedals.

It successfully turned a corner using sensor data while respecting traffic signals, though cautiously.

Despite technical limitations and speed consistency issues, researchers plan to improve Musashi for future applications.

Symposium highlights scale of mental health crisis and novel methods of diagnosis and treatment

Digital technologies, like smartphones and machine learning, have revolutionized education and could significantly advance mental health diagnosis and treatment.

At the McGovern Institute's 2024 Spring Symposium, experts highlighted the potential of these technologies for addressing mental health disorders.

Meet the Photographer Behind the Social Media App for Everyone Sick of Meta’s AI

Jingna Zhang, photographer and art director, has been pulling all-nighters for her social platform for artists, Cara.

The platform exploded in popularity due to opposition to Meta’s policies on AI and art, leading to a $96,000 cloud storage bill and service outages.
