Meta’s AI tools for advertisers can now create full new images, not just new backgrounds

Wednesday - May 8 - 2024

Meta is rolling out an expanded set of generative AI tools for advertisers, after first announcing a set of AI features last October.

Now, instead of only being able to create different backgrounds for a product image, advertisers can also request full image variations, which offer AI-inspired ideas for the overall photo, including riffs that update the photo’s subject or product being advertised.

Amazon is launching a new tool, Bedrock Studio, designed to let organizations experiment with generative AI models, collaborate on those models, and ultimately build generative AI-powered apps.

Meta is expanding its AI tools for advertisers, adding features like full image variations and text overlays in popular fonts.

Advertisers can now alter product images from different angles and scenarios, potentially misrepresenting actual products.

Despite risks, Meta claims strong safeguards are in place to ensure quality and appropriateness of generated content.

The features, introduced last October, are part of the broader rollout of generative AI capabilities, including image and text variations meant to streamline ad creation across platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Meta's AI can also alter ad headlines to match brand voice. All features will be globally available by year-end.

Amazon has launched Bedrock Studio, a new tool within its Bedrock platform, aimed at helping organizations build generative AI-powered apps.

Bedrock Studio offers a web-based environment for rapid prototyping with AI models from various providers like Anthropic and Cohere.

It includes features for evaluating, fine-tuning, and integrating models with external data and APIs.

The tool also supports collaboration through features like single sign-on for enterprises.

Bedrock Studio seamlessly integrates with Amazon Web Services, ensuring that all apps and data remain within the user’s AWS account for security.

This launch positions Amazon to compete with similar offerings from Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure in the generative AI development space.

Robert Kahn, co-creator of the Internet, remains a pivotal figure in its evolution.

Recently awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor, Kahn discussed ongoing challenges in computing that echo past issues, from cybersecurity to misinformation.

In an interview, he reflected on his innovative work, like the concept of "knowbots" (knowledge robots) designed to perform tasks online, predating modern AI agents.

Kahn also developed the digital object architecture, relevant to today’s blockchain technologies.

Despite setbacks, such as early cybersecurity threats, his contributions continue to influence digital communication, emphasizing the seamless interaction between digital objects, not just people.

At its recent iPad event, Apple previewed its AI capabilities integrated across its devices, notably in the new iPad Air and iPad Pro.

The iPad Air features the M2 chip with enhanced CPU, GPU, and neural engine, supporting advanced AI functions like visual lookup and live text capture.

Apple also highlighted third-party AI applications like Pixelmator’s Photomator.

The iPad Pro now includes the M4 chip, promising up to 50% faster performance with its next-generation machine learning accelerators.

While detailed AI use cases weren't fully explored, Apple emphasized that these hardware improvements would enhance applications like Logic Pro, which now includes AI-driven session players.

Overall, Apple’s presentation subtly introduced AI improvements aimed at refining user experience, setting the stage for more comprehensive AI announcements expected at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC).

Samsung Medison to acquire French AI ultrasound startup Sonio for $92.7M

Samsung Medison, part of Samsung Electronics, plans to buy Sonio, a Paris-based startup making AI software for ultrasound, for about $92.7 million.

Sonio's tech aids obstetricians with ultrasound evaluations and has U.S. FDA approval.

Ofcom to push for better age verification, filters and 40 other checks in new online child safety code

Ofcom is tightening regulations on Instagram, YouTube, and 150,000 other web services to enhance child safety online.

The new UK Children’s Safety Code mandates stricter age checks and content filtering to limit exposure to harmful content like suicide, self-harm, and pornography.

OpenAI’s New Tool Will Give Artists Control Over Their Data—but It’s Unclear How

OpenAI is addressing lawsuits over its use of copyrighted content by announcing a new tool, Media Manager, set for 2025 release.

This tool will allow content creators to manage how their work is used in AI training.

Although still under development with unnamed partners, the tool aims to set an industry standard by enabling creators to specify inclusion or exclusion of their works in machine learning projects.

The Met Gala saw generative AI deepfakes grab the spotlight alongside celebrities this year.

Katy Perry, who didn't attend, was virally depicted in AI-generated outfits, like a dress with floral appliqués and a bronze corset in Xena style, gaining millions of views.

Similarly, other absent stars like Rihanna appeared in elaborate fake attire.
