Google Cloud Next 2024: Everything announced so far

Thursday - April 11 - 2024

Google’s Cloud Next 2024 event takes place in Las Vegas through Thursday, and that means lots of new cloud-focused news on everything from Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot, to AI to devops and security.

Last year’s event was the first in-person Cloud Next since 2019, and Google took to the stage to show off its ongoing dedication to AI with its Duet AI for Gmail and many other debuts, including expansion of generative AI to its security product line and other enterprise-focused updates and debuts.

Don’t have time to watch the full archive of Google’s keynote event? That’s OK; we’ve summed up the most important parts of the event below, with additional details from the TechCrunch team on the ground at the event.

Google Photos is getting an AI upgrade.

On Wednesday, the tech giant announced that a handful of enhanced editing features previously limited to Pixel devices and paid subscribers — including its AI-powered Magic Editor — will now make their way to all Google Photos users for free.

This expansion also includes Google’s Magic Eraser, which removes unwanted items from photos; Photo Unblur, which uses machine learning to sharpen blurry photos; Portrait Light, which lets you change the light source on photos after the fact, and others.

The editing tools have historically been a selling point for Google’s high-end devices, the Pixel phones, as well as a draw for Google’s cloud storage subscription product, Google One. But with the growing number of AI-powered editing tools flooding the market, Google has decided to make its set of AI photo editing features available to more people for free.

Meta, hell-bent on catching up to rivals in the generative AI space, is spending billions on its own AI efforts.

A portion of those billions is going toward recruiting AI researchers.

But an even larger chunk is being spent developing hardware, specifically chips to run and train Meta’s AI models.

Meta unveiled the newest fruit of its chip dev efforts today, conspicuously a day after Intel announced its latest AI accelerator hardware. Called the “next-gen” Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA), the successor to last year’s MTIA v1, the chip runs models including for ranking and recommending display ads on Meta’s properties (e.g. Facebook).

Compared to MTIA v1, which was built on a 7nm process, the next-gen MTIA is 5nm. (In chip manufacturing, “process” refers to the size of the smallest component that can be built on the chip.) The next-gen MTIA is a physically larger design, packed with more processing cores than its predecessor.

OpenAI has announced that its powerful GPT-4 Turbo with Vision model is now generally available through the company’s API, opening up new opportunities for enterprises and developers to integrate advanced language and vision capabilities into their applications.

The launch of GPT-4 Turbo with Vision on the API follows the initial release of GPT-4’s vision and audio upload features last September and the unveiling of the turbocharged GPT-4 Turbo model at OpenAI’s developer conference in November.

GPT-4 Turbo promises significant speed improvements, larger input context windows of up to 128,000 tokens (equivalent to about 300 pages), and increased affordability for developers.

Stability AI unveils 12B parameter Stable LM 2 model and updated 1.6B variant

Stability AI has introduced the latest additions to its Stable LM 2 language model series: a 12 billion parameter base model and an instruction-tuned variant.

These models were trained on an impressive two trillion tokens across seven languages: English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Dutch.

Microsoft AI opens London hub to access ‘enormous pool’ of talent

Microsoft is doubling down on its AI efforts in the UK with the opening of a major new AI hub in London.

The Microsoft AI London outpost will focus on advancing state-of-the-art language models, supporting infrastructure, and tooling for foundation models.

A faster, better way to prevent an AI chatbot from giving toxic responses

A user could ask ChatGPT to write a computer program or summarize an article, and the AI chatbot would likely be able to generate useful code or write a cogent synopsis. However, someone could also ask for instructions to build a bomb, and the chatbot might be able to provide those, too.

How to Stop Your Data From Being Used to Train AI

If you’ve ever posted something to the internet—a pithy tweet, a 2009 blog post, a scornful review, or a selfie on Instagram—it has most likely been slurped up and used to help train the current wave of generative AI.

Large language models, like ChatGPT, and image creators are powered by vast reams of our data.

Humans Forget. AI Assistants Will Remember Everything

PROPONENTS OF ARTIFICIAL intelligence are quick to list the myriad ways their tech will serve as extensions of our busy brains.

But as Apple, Google, and other companies race to bring their AI creations onto our phones, we’re being presented with an opportunity to use these next-gen digital assistants to correct one of our inherent human flaws: poor memory.
