This Week in AI: Generative AI and the problem of compensating creators

Sunday - May 5 - 2024

Keeping up with an industry as fast-moving as AI is a tall order.

So until an AI can do it for you, here’s a handy roundup of recent stories in the world of machine learning, along with notable research and experiments we didn’t cover on their own.

This week in AI, eight prominent U.S. newspapers owned by investment giant Alden Global Capital, including the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel, sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement relating to the companies’ use of generative AI tech.

Hallucinations — the lies generative AI models tell, basically — are a big problem for businesses looking to integrate the technology into their operations.

Because models have no real intelligence and are simply predicting words, images, speech, music and other data according to a private schema, they sometimes get it wrong.

Keeping up with the fast-paced AI industry, here's a roundup of key stories.

This week, eight newspapers including New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune, owned by Alden Global Capital, sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged IP infringement in their AI technologies.

They join The New York Times in accusing the companies of using their content without compensation.

A research paper from OpenAI suggests a compensation framework using game theory to determine content owners' rightful share.

Other AI updates include Microsoft’s facial recognition policy update and AI-powered chatbot launches by Yelp.

Generative AI often hallucinates, fabricating data like non-existent meeting attendees, posing a challenge for businesses integrating AI.

While today’s AI models lack genuine intelligence and merely predict data, a new technical approach called Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) claims to minimize these errors by referencing verifiable sources.

However, RAG isn't foolproof and can't entirely eliminate hallucinations, especially in complex reasoning tasks.

It's also resource-intensive, requiring significant computing power and memory.

Despite these drawbacks, ongoing research aims to enhance RAG's effectiveness, particularly in handling abstract concepts beyond mere keywords.

TechCrunch shines a light on women in AI with a series featuring impactful contributors, such as Tara Chklovski, CEO of Technovation.

This nonprofit educates young girls in technology and entrepreneurship, addressing global issues.

Chklovski, with degrees from St. Stephen’s College and Boston University, launched the first global AI education program in partnership with Google and Nvidia.

She highlights the role of diverse voices in AI development and advises newcomers to start learning through online resources and projects, emphasizing the importance of involving underrepresented groups in AI creation for more innovative outcomes.

SoftServe is leading in AI development, emphasizing responsible practices as it prepares to showcase at the AI & Big Data Expo North America.

Chuck Ros, Industry Success Director, highlighted a project enhancing field service management with AI, boosting efficiency and sparking innovation.

Despite AI's benefits, Ros underscored the importance of data strategy and ethical considerations, like bias testing and data privacy.

SoftServe aims to refine AI-assisted development, potentially increasing productivity by 40%.

The firm also supports social initiatives, such as the Open Eyes Foundation, and will discuss the role of Generative AI in education at the Expo, showcasing its application in personalizing learning experiences.
