Saturday - June 1 - 2024

The English Premier League concluded recently with Manchester City winning the league, fulfilling AI predictions from last August.

The English Premier League concluded recently with Manchester City winning the league, fulfilling AI predictions from last August.

AI Business and Kickoff.ai had used machine learning to predict the 2023/24 season, and they gave Manchester City the highest probability of winning.

City did win, marking their fourth consecutive title.

Liverpool, predicted second, finished third, while Arsenal chased City until the final day.

Aston Villa, a surprise, finished fourth despite only a 13% AI prediction of a top-four finish.

Kickoff.ai's model also predicted Burnley's strong season, but they finished second from bottom.

Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, predicted for relegation, finished 12th and 17th.

Aston Villa exceeded expectations under Unai Emery, similar to Leicester City's shock win in 2015/16.

Wolves, predicted to struggle after their manager's departure, finished 14th under Gary O’Neil.

Kickoff.ai’s model adapts weekly for changes like managerial shifts, using "Kickscore" to measure team performance over time, dynamically updating based on recent data.

Elon Musk plans to build the world's most powerful AI supercomputer for his AI chatbot Grok, intending to acquire 100,000 Nvidia semiconductor chips.

The project, aiming for completion next year, was presented to investors of his AI startup xAI.

Musk envisions a “gigafactory of compute” using Nvidia’s H100 GPUs, creating a machine four times larger than current GPU clusters.

xAI announced a multi-billion dollar funding round to support the initiative.

Launched to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT, Grok aims to be an “anti-woke” alternative, designed for "spicy questions" with a bit of wit.

xAI's mission focuses on developing AI systems that are “truthful, competent, and beneficial for all of humanity.”

Voice cloning startup ElevenLabs introduced a new tool today that allows users to generate sound effects through prompts.

Announced in February, the tool enables users to create sounds like “waves crashing” or “birds chirping,” and instrumental clips like guitar loops and jazz solos.

Free users can generate up to 60 sound effects monthly, attributing them to “elevenlabs.io”.

Trained on Shutterstock’s audio library, the tool is popular with video game developers, filmmakers, and marketers.

ElevenLabs ensures compliance with its Prohibited Content and Uses Policy.

Competitors include Stability AI's Harmonai, Google’s MusicLM, OpenAI’s Jukebox, and Meta’s AudioCraft.

Late Friday, AI startup Hugging Face disclosed “unauthorized access” to its Spaces platform.

In a blog post, the company said the breach involved "Spaces secrets," or private keys for protected resources, and suspects some were accessed by a third party.

As a precaution, Hugging Face revoked several tokens and advised users to refresh keys and switch to more secure tokens.

The number of affected users or apps is unclear.

Hugging Face is investigating with cybersecurity specialists and has reported the incident to law enforcement.

The platform, hosting over a million AI models and apps, has faced recent scrutiny over security vulnerabilities, partnering with Wiz to enhance its security measures.

Chatbots Are Entering Their Stone Age

Despite the hype, generative AI hasn't yet revolutionized white-collar work. Workers use chatbots for tasks like drafting emails, but major changes are lacking.

This might change with “AI agents” that can operate software.

Anthropic’s new product, Claude, can use tools like calculators or databases, showing AI's potential.

Does String Theory Actually Describe the World? AI May Be Able to Tell

String theory captured physicists' imaginations decades ago with its elegant simplicity: at the smallest scales, only identical vibrating strands of energy exist.

These "strings" might explain elementary particles and forces.

Meet the Non-Profit Trying to Create a Definition for Open Source AI

There is no standard definition for open source AI. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) aims to create a universal definition for transparency and accessibility.

“AI is different from regular software,” said Stefano Maffulli, OSI’s executive director. “OSI believes in maintaining control and promoting transparency, collaboration, and innovation.”

Nvidia Shares Soar After Stellar Earnings—Along With Chip Stocks

Chip stocks soared after Nvidia exceeded Wall Street expectations with its latest earnings report, driven by AI interest.

Nvidia shares climbed nearly 8% in after-hours trading on Wednesday, peaking above $1,000 per share for the first time.
